Mexican Wild Yam is a species of the Wild Yam plant (Dioscorea villosa). It is rich in steroidal saponins, & has served a key role in the making of hormones and the development of the birth control pill. Mexican Wild Yam has a very high concentration of a substance called diosgenin which is a steroid like substance and is involved in the production of the hormone progesterone. Wild yam has traditionally been used for treating menstrual cramps, nausea and morning sickness associated with pregnancy, inflammation, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms, and other health conditions.
