Which vitamins should I take in winter?
Cold seasons is upon us, along with a natural sense of winter fatigue and a genuine experiencing of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It’s important to boost our immunity in winter with plenty of the right vitamins and minerals. The food we eat stimulates our immune cells, to keep the immune system working in top form and fighting off infection.
- Vitamin D – found naturally in oily fish and red meat, helps maintain healthy muscles, bones, and teeth. Often associated with sunshine, we can get all the Vitamin D we need from sunlight Spring to September. Symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency include illness, fatigue, muscle pain and low mood.
- Vitamin C – found in abundance in oranges, tomatoes and peppers - Vitamin C helps maintain cells, skin, bones and helps with wound healing, tiredness and the absorption of iron.
- Iron – associated with red meat but also found in spinach, dark chocolate, tofu, and lentils. Iron is essential for growth and development. Iron makes haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body.
- Zinc – a nutrient which helps build our immune system and can help with skincare, acne, and eczema. Food sources for zinc include tofu, chicken, broccoli, and fortified breakfast cereals.

Many foods are good sources of iron, meat, beans & dark green leafy vegetables. Drinking tea & coffee can limit the absorption of iron whilst foods containing Vitamin C can increase absorption.
