Beat the holiday blues with a seasonal reset

It’s common to feel this way after enjoying a more relaxed schedule, possibly indulgent meals, and out of the exercise routine. However, that back-to-school feeling gets us all and is a great time to reset and focus on returning to a healthy routine. With the right mindset, exercise, and proper nutrition, we can bounce back and feel energised for the autumn.

Step 1: Ease Into Exercise

A good way to shake off the blues is to start moving. Exercise releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones, which can lift our mood. Beginning with activities that we enjoy, such as walking, swimming, cycling, or yoga - low-impact exercises will help ease our bodies back into motion without being overwhelming.

As we increase activity levels, there’ll be improvements in both physical health and mental clarity. For structure, creating a workout plan that fits our schedule will help maintain consistency. Even 20-30 minutes of daily movement can make a significant difference.

Step 2: Nutrition Reset with Vitamins and Minerals

A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential to restoring your energy and boosting mood. After a period of indulgent eating, resetting a diet with nutrient-dense foods can help you regain vitality. Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Certain vitamins and minerals can be particularly helpful during this transition, Vitamin D, often referred to as the sunshine vitamin, is crucial for maintaining a positive mood, especially as the days get shorter. As we spend much more time outdoors in summer, a vitamin D supplement may help compensate for lower sun exposure as the days become shorter.

Magnesium is key mineral for that post-summer routine. It supports muscle function and reduces stress, both of which are vital for restoring balance after a relaxing break. Consider incorporating foods high in magnesium, like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, or choose a magnesium supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acid is important for brain health and mood regulation. Found in fish oil or plant-based sources like flaxseed, these fats can help us stay focused and energized.

Step 3: Focus on Self-Care

Self-care is not just about physical health; it's also about mental well-being. As we get back into a routine, it’s beneficial to make time for activities that reduce stress, such as meditation, journaling, or spending time with loved ones. Prioritising sleep is equally important—ensuring we get 7-9 hours of rest per night will keep our mind and body rejuvenated.

Beating the post-summer holiday blues is about finding balance. By incorporating regular exercise, focusing on a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and prioritising mental self-care, we can transition smoothly back into our routine.
